All Along opens my first album, Ancient Ships, recorded in January 1979. The artwork is by Miro Malis. I am seated at the keyboard on a mudflat, singing backwards. To my right is the stone, off to the left a stray boot. I was finding my way into a complex musical world, searching for my voice, listening and playing widely, studying and writing. The touchstones for All Along are Erik Satie's Gymnopédies and Gnossiennes. Sometimes, after a long session of practice or recording, I would open the front door to clear my head and take some air, to find strangers, sitting on the steps, listening. Perhaps someone was listening to this performance as I tried to make time stand still, here, where we have been all along.
